If there is a class that can cross the blood brain barrier, what are they? I'm a psychology major with a specialty in substance abuse; I'm doing a project on this. Thanks!

Antibiotics from the tetracycline family, the penicillin family, and cephalasporin family , Macrolides such as Rulid (roxythromycin), Zithromax (azithromycin), and Biaxin (clarithromycin) and parasiticidals like, Flagyl (metronidazole), Fasigyn (tinidazole) and Plaquenil (chloroquine) are the drugs which cross blood brain barrier.

Yes; that's one way doctors manage to treat things like bacterial meningitis. Sulfonamides/TMS and chloramphenicol are among the most commonly known antibiotics with the ability to cross. Some lipid-soluble tetracyclines can enter the CNS, but aren't effective at treating infections there.
Also, if there's swelling (as in meningitis) lots of 'ordinary' antibiotics, like penicillin, can pass through. (Until they start working, at least; then the blood-brain barrier resumes its normal function.) There are also hyperosmotic solutions which transiently induce the blood-brain barrier to open up a bit so that ordinary drugs can pass through, but because they need to be injected into the carotid artery, this isn't really practical for antibiotics.

Don't take this as an absolute. Forunately, the time they're really needed to cross the BBB is in meningitis, and the BBB becomes more porous in that circumstance. The difference is made up by simply giving more. For instance, a single dose of 125 mg of ceftriaxone will cure your average case of clap, and the usual dose for meningitis is 2000 mg daily for two or three weeks.
