The remaining dollar is not missing. When the shop keeper gives every one a dollar each and gives himself two dollars, that adds up to 5 dollars (1+1+1+2). Add that to 25 and you get thirty dollars. It is ridiculous to assume that each friend paid 9 dollars because they each paid ten dollars. They just got a dollar back because of the special and the shop keeper get two dollars which evens everything out. Thus, the dollar is not missing, it is just the wording that creates the "missing" dollar.

The guys each paid 9$, that's 27$. The beers cost 25$, so they've paid 2$ too much. The shop keeper has 2 $ doesn't he?
It works out. Good trick though.

The $2 is already included in the $ 27 ($25 + $2).
So we cannot add back again the $2 to $ 27.
There is no missing dollar here, only a math trick.

This is a trick in figures. 10+10+10 is the thirty right. 30 less five is 36 so there is five and 1+1+1+2 and there it is.
You can not use the 9+9+9 ....these are fun.
this one
I have htree sons and I bought 17 CDs on sale to divide among the three boys. The youngest is 7 and not into music much yet so he got one ninth the next boy is twelve snd starting to get into misic so he got one third and the sixteen year old got one half.
Now how can you divide the 17 CDs among the boys as stated.
Borrow one CD from your neighbor and then you have 18 Now it is easy. one ninth is two and one third is six and one half is nine now what you have is 2+6+9 to make 17 so you return the other to your neighbotr.

You big dummy - Your question should be, "$29 - $2 = $25. They paid $27, yes. $25 for the beer and the shopkeeper kept $2. $25 + $2 = $27.

well the shopkeeper was good. he got the money. They should have asked 1.25 each so they all get an equal share. you can't divide 5 dollars by three because it's non terminating. that shopkeeper must have a bunch of stolen one dollars.
