PLC is Programmable logic Controllers
Its like a computer programming - which will perform some predefined Actions for every changes that is occuring in any PLC based system
For Example
If You have a water tank in which you are having a pump to fill up and Level transmitter
Using the PLC this Level of the Water tank and the Pumps on/off control can be linked
You Can define the pump's on/off status with respect to the Level of the Water tank in the PLC ,
Based on that the pump will get start and stop whenever the level reaches to that level you mentioned to start the pump

PLC is Programmable Logic Controller. It has a CPU (Central Processing Unit), a power supply unit, one or more input module & output module.
You have to program the CPU in order to get the required output when a given set of inputs exist. For example, "When inputs 1 and 3 are present and input 2 is absent, output 3 should be present". The programing can be done in many ways depending on the manufacturer, but a common method is relay ladder logic.
PLCs are used in controlling industrial equipment.
