You've been diagnosed with perio disease and are scheduled for a root planing to clean out pockets that will hopefully be more manageable for you to maintain with daily cleaning. They may clean a quadrant at a time or just the teeth that have deep pockets that are of concern. Here is a site that can show you or give you a better idea of what perio disease is and it's stages. Hopefully the deep cleaning and your ability to maintain excellent home care will allow you to keep the pockets at a minimum level that you can control and keep clean to prevent bone loss or the progression of the disease. Good luck and I hope this site will help.

Sounds like your Dentist needs more money. Here's why it is done: The upper level of infection in the pockets around your teeth can be removed using specialized instruments. This procedure is called, “Scaling and Root Planing", “Phase One Treatment" or “Initial Therapy". It is done under local anesthesia and is quite different from the routine dental cleaning or “deep cleaning" that is traditionally done in the general dentist's office. Unless you have been having problems, I wouldn't go for it. However, if he really means a simple cleaning of your teeth, that would be great. Hope this may help.

HeatherS is correct, so vote her as the best answer.

To answer your question, "What does perio mean?" properly, though...

peri = "around" as in "perimeter"
odont = Greek for tooth
odontal = dealing with the teeth
periodontal = literally, "around the teeth" or loosely, "the gums and bone and supporting structures of the teeth."
