Friend has a 4 mo doberman pup. Came from the breeder with her ears cropped. They have been taping and posting since Dec, and still having trouble getting them to stand. One wants to flop down (stands when alerted only) and the other flips over the top of her head. I've tried to tell them it could take MONTHS of taping and posting, but they are getting fed up and are considering trying implants. I've never dealt with ears that came cropped, I prefer to handle them from day 1. Any suggestions that might help them would be greatly appreciated.

She'd never allow them to do a recrop. I've never had a problem with our dobes ears(6 of them), but we requested the breeder leave them natural so we could deal with them right from the beginning.

so_cool_: hope your dobe is doing better.

If it was me, I would take it to the vet, and ask the vet the best thing to do for it. It has only been a few months, so really a good 6 months is how long it takes. Luckily, I got my dobies ears done the day she turned 10 wks and we have only had to tape her ears once in about 6 weeks, so I am VERY pleased. But my vet told me that is usually takes a good 4 to 6 months for them to stand. Make sure that they let the ears "dry out" for about 2 to 3 day(at the most) before they re-tape so they wont get infection. And also, the military and medium cut take less to stand than the show/long crop.

a vet can give the best advice. take the dog to the vet to look at before considering inplants. they may have to recrop them. be wary bout getting recropped. alot of vets dont do crops and some that do dont do them very well(that may be why the pups ears are not standing). also sometimes it just takes longer for some dogs ears to stand. i hope this helps. good luck!

They have to be vigilante with the taping. Some dogs take as long as a year for the ears to stand properly. I've had great luck using tampon cardboards as posts(no kidding,a vet showed me).

Talk to a vet, or they'll just have to keep taping and posting..... Not that you care, but our doberman just got surgery removing a mass cell tumor off her back. But yeah, I would ask the vet about implants and ask his/her opinion on what to do. Good luck :-)

Tell them they should call the breeder and find out excatly how long they should be taped and if they have been taped long enough, than he may have to have them recropped. Do the breeder thing first
