Whatever you do, don't send him mixed messages, especially if you are unsure of your feelings. That wouldn't be fair. Would you want someone to do that to you? Friendship is the best place to start the base of any relationship. Continue to be his friend. Tell him that, however tell him that the romantic interest just isn't there for now. Be honest. But, don't do things to lead him on. No sexual overtures, or talk of things on an intimate level. If your feelings are that of a friend, then, treat him as such.

Here's what you do. Sit down with him privately when you're both calm and level-headed. Tell him that you care for him very much as a person, but don't feel you're compatible as a couple. Tell him you want to remain friends, but understand that breaking up with him might hurt him, so you'll understand if he doesn't want to talk to you for a while.
And then stick to that promise. When he's ready, you will be best buds again.

Honesty is the best policy, I have been in the situation before and you just have to come out and say it. You may not be friends at 1st b/c he's going to be hurt but after that it may work out. Sitting him down and just saying what you feel really is the best thing to do, don't beat around the bush.

Doesn't matter how you do it, you will crush him.
Just get it over with so he can move on, don't string him along.
And the "friend" thing, forget it, you have moved past that, there is no going back.
Guys can't be friends after a relationship, at least none that I know.

So he's a nice guy and you want a bad boy, right? Just do the guy a favor and tell him that you're just not good enough for him and let him find someone who deserves better than you.
