He had an upset stomach when we got him. So we fed him a bland diet, which sorted the problem, but now we've been told to introduce tinned or dried puppy food into his diet, but he won't touch it. He was underweight when we got him, now he's lovely and stocky. I don't want him to lose weight again, but should I not give in to his fussiness and make him adjust to the puppy tinned stuff when he's really hungry or give him what he wants. Sorry to be so long winded.

Chicken and rice is not a balanced enough diet for him to stay on solely. Try mixing the other puppy food in with some chicken and rice and wean him off of it over a period of 3-4 days. He'll get used to it and it will be easier on his system then a drastic diet change.

Slowly add a little dried food into the mix. Make sure his favourite food is on the top of his bowl so he goes to eat. Generally once a dog starts to eat his food he continues through to the end. I would be a bit careful of the tinned foods as we hada dog that always seemed to have an upset tummy until we took him off tinned food and resorted to dry mixed with rice and chopped cooked chicken with some raw mince. Does not take long to prepare and the chicken and rice can be bulk cooked and frozen until needed.

When you change a dogs food, its best to do it gradually over about 2 weeks. Have you tried mashing a teaspoon of puppy food into the chicken and rice, and just gradually increase the amount while decreasing what he's used to?
It sounds like he's a fussy eater, you might do better with the tinned stuff rather than the dried.

Plz don't feed him tinned food as although it looks nice and meaty and tasty to us humans,in fact, the majority of it is water!!!!! I would recommend that you gradually introduce a dry diet to your puppy as this more filling and has a higher nutrition value. There are many varieties on the market which can be a bit confusing , personally I use Nutro Choice as it is great value for money but more importantly has the best ingredients which keeps my dogs in excellent health, they are strong, vibrant and have really good skin and coats....

what you need to do is start off with a mixture of the rice and chicken with the tinned dog food and slowly over a few weeks take the rice and chicken out. but you can always do just the tinned food as a puppy will never starve when there's food there.
dog instincts will tell the dog it needs to survive and will eventually eat it.
puppy's can be as bad as small children, if you give in to the puppy he knows he can get away with it. if he eats the food reward him with something small, either something he likes or a toy.

Add just a little bit of kibble to the chicken/rice mixture for a few days, then increase it a bit more for a few days. Every 3 days add a bit more. After 2 wks you can take the chicken/rice mixture and put some warm water in it and pour it over the dry kibble, so it is more like an additional goody rather than the main course (sort of like a gravy).

Hope it helps.

Wow a whole puppy is in charge of you.

Giving in to him will make him a nasty, unruly adult dog who intimidates you.

The dog eats after you've finished eating.

The dog eats puppy food only unless you're under instructions from the vet.

It will soon eat when it's hungry.

Cruel to be kind. However the gradual reintroduction method is good if he's not trying to dominate you. If he barks at you when you put down the tinned food, he's trying to dominate you.

Give him chicken and rice but mix a little dry puppy food in with it.Over about a week or 2 gradually decrease the amount of chicken and rice and increase the amount of puppy food.

Eventually he should be weaned onto eating just puppy food.

My dog doesn't touch her food either....
I acually went to petsmart and bought some of those Iams sauces for my dogs dry food and now my dog will eat her food.
Another thing I do with my dog is to stil in a closed small room with her and put the food bowl next to the door. I've had to stay there for about 30 minutes once until she ate her food but then I open the door and play with her a bit.
