She should be fine switching back and forth between the two. However, she might want to check with her college - many colleges offer students major discounts on software, including MS Office. She may be able to purchase a copy for $50 or so and install it at home. She should check with the IT department at the college.

Yes it will, my daughter is still using it to go through college. If she has a paper made in Microsoft Office, she can open it in Open Office Org, edit it, and save it as A Microsoft Word document. Then she can take it back to college, and it will still open as Word Document on her computer. One big however, Open Office will only save it in Word 97, so if she is using Word 2007, I am not sure if everything will work out. I would suggest telling her to download it to her computer and give it a try, it's free.

YOU DONT NEED MS OFFICE! Open office will do anything MS office will do, except BETTER because it will be more secure and less prone to Viruses. When you install Open Office, there will be a box as to which documents to convert. Check all 3 boxes and then all your old Microsoft stuff will be converted to Open Office automatically.

Yes, she should be able to switch back and forth. One issue, however, is to make sure that OOwriter has the same fonts as WORD. Otherwise, the document will look different in each app. Fonts are available on the internet. I don't have the site available, but Yahoo Search should turn it up.
