There's a great need for civilian employees throughout the military. Many of our trained military personnel are deployed overseas and that's left open positions desperately needing to be filled... I would think that there would be a lot of training and experience requirements for a mechanic since the military uses a lot of specialized equipment- it's worth looking into though if you think this is something you'd like to do.

I am a military contractor- while I don't work with mechanics- I do provide civilian nurses to AF MTF's across the country- the pay is decent but it's a tough gig from some employees who have a difficult time transitioning from public employee to military employee- also civilian employees do not get all the same perks and days off and pay as military personnel and this can sometimes lead to feelings of inequality or the government valuing military personnel more so than those civilians providing services.

Anyway best wishes to you, I'm listing my company's website in the source section- we only work with the military- AF, Navy, and Army...

Good Luck!

If they used all that money they pay civilians, to up the military pay scale, maybe they would recruit more people, or the retention numbers would be higher. They are pointless also. Example: Civilian cooks are cooking at a DFAC on a FOB in Iraq. Guess what the 15 Army cooks are doing? Walking around with a thermometer checking the temperatures of the food. That's it. Oh and don't forget the 2 Army cooks sitting at the front door counting how many people go through. I could've swore the Army cooks were trained to cook. My bad.

Politics and "Pork-Barrel" Politicians !! The US Military downsized and outsourced jobs after WWII, Vietnam, and the Cold-War/ Gulf War... at the behest of Congress and a shrinking Budget. This also happened because of deals tween Congress and Labor Unions... the unions want UNION workers doing things rather than soldiers/sailors who don't pay union DUES !

Congress love to claim that it saves money for the taxpayers... "See, look at how we've SLASHED the Defense budget !!" But then they have to hire DOD civilians, or contract that work out at FAR higher costs.

I remember when the Navy ran it's own mess-halls, print-shops, and maintenance... now most of the work is done by contractors.

Now SOME work... such as major repair on a tank or ATV or aircraft needs to go BACK to the manufacturer due to complexity or tooling.

Particularly during President Clinton's successive military budget cuts it became clear that military members' job was military and that non-military tasks could and must be contracted out to civilians. Many maintenance features are among those.
