Just avoid PETA...but put that aside.....Research by starting with orgs. like the Humane Society or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. You know you may have many hands on groups available in your neighborhood that you may enjoy more because you'd be supporting the cause at a grass roots level close to home....a pretty good start! Do your homework & get busy! We need more people like you who have positive attitudes toward one the most heinous things happening in our world today...cruelty & disrespect for life.....(think cerial killers...most of whom began as children torturing any small thiing they could get their hands on including the family pet) Thank you!!

Yes, the ASPCA:
Here's some info:
Founded in 1866 as the first animal welfare organization in the Western Hemisphere, the ASPCA continues to pursue the mission as charted by our founder Henry Bergh—to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals. We're a national organization headquartered in New York City, and our ongoing fight to prevent cruelty and alleviate the pain, fear and suffering of animals is supported by more than 1,000,000 members and supporters from across the United States. Our national programs, whereby we work with animal welfare organizations all around the country, include Anti-Cruelty & Legislative Services, Humane Education, Government Affairs and Public Policy, Shelter Outreach, Animal Behavior Services and the Animal Poison Control Center. These programs actively support our goal toward the day in which no animal will live in pain or fear.

PeTA is headed up by a bunch of loonies!
You'd be better off with the Humane Society or local conservation organizations.
PeTA really crossed the line with ad campaigns like "Holocaust on a Plate" (VERY offensive to Jews, especially those who survived the WWII holocaust, comparing the extermination of 6 million Jews to a chicken dinner). And I can't believe they had the audacity to distribute a very graphic comic book to kids suggesting that their mommies kill small animals!
They also preach so much against killing animals yet members were caught doing the same thing to dogs and throwing their carcasses in a dumpster! They really have a "do as I say, not as I do" mentality, don't they?

What do you consider violent? If throwing some paint on people and boycotting and picketing is violent, then you'll be hard pressed to find a more civilized group. They aren't bombing animal labs. They aren't kidnapping the kids of fur dealers. They aren't beating hunters with rabbit carcasses. They *DO* use in your face propaganda, but they generally aren't harming people to get their point across.
What you may want to do is do what you can in your personal life and not join any "group". No one says that you have to be part of a "group" to make a difference. Avoid things that cause harm to animals and keep up on different topics. This can be via the Peta website, the HSUS website, the PCRM website, or a thousand other sites.
If you are donating time and money, pick a no-kill shelter near you and volunteer there. Pick an animal rescue group and send them money when you can. Create your own local non-violent group to help make a difference. It only takes one person to change the world.

I suppose you could ask Matt H about that (hey, he talks about me behind my back).
Peta is largely about taking money to the bank instead of working for true positive change. Keep in mind that statement comes from a very early member of the group who got disgusted and left 20 years ago over their love of any publicity whether good or bad (they almost got me killed (long story)).
If you want to join an organization that really does make a difference and doesn't believe in sitting on a war chest full of dollars use the link below!

peta is not a violent animal rights group, they do not support violence. they do however unofficially support other (violent) animal rights groups, but peta is not a violent animal rights group.
