Halal meat does not look any different than non-halal meat. The only difference is that it was slaughtered differently and a prayer was read.
With that being said, regarless to whether it was killed by halal customs or not, it probably wasn't halal because of the way that it was fed. For example: According to Islamic law, all animals that are to be eaten cannot be fed a cannibal diet. So, if it's a cow, it can't be fed another cows remains, or even worse, a pig's remains. And whether you know it or not, most American farms (including the ones where the "halal" meat companies buy their livestock from) feed their cows a cannibal diet. Another thing is the conditions in which these animals are held in. In Islam, animal abuse is a big no no and buying animals that were abused is also not allowed.
Of course, most Muslims don't know this, unfortunately, and whenever I try to explain it to them, they give me blank stares and eat their non-halal meat, which they really believe is halal because they bought it from a guy named Abdul. Or they just don't care.

The customer was trying to pull a fast one on the Indian. Muslims feel about one degree better about Indians than they do about Israelis. Kashmir is viewed as a Hindu/Muslim dispute to many, not an Indian/Pakistani dispute. Muslims feel the same about Indians that Indians do about blacks.
Like the others said, 'halal' just means that the animal's suffering was limited as much as possible and that a prayer was said at slaughter. It's the same as kosher. The meat looks the same.

I have eaten both Halal and non-Halal meat, and they do not look any different from each other. The main difference is in the slaughtering process i.e. religious rules. My guess is the shop owner was trying to pacify the customer but his answer was rather illogical...

The shop owner was being dishonest. Definitely.
read "The Food Revolution" by John Robbins or watch "Earthlings", narrated by Joaquin Phoenix for a better explanation of what actually happens to most meat claiming to be 'halal' - maybe leave chapters lying around the shop with highlighted sections for your boss (and maybe your local food standards code!)

Salam for you. shall we no longer say bismillah for eating a non halal nutrition for making it permissable to devour, different than there is not any different halal ingredients .this occasion is impossible in the renowned society So the haram nutrition such as pig meat is often no longer allowed to be eaten by potential of muslims with or with out saying bismillah.

could be that the topping looked a bit like pork (which is a nono). Halal means that the animal has been prayed over before being slaughtered.

halal meat doesn't look different...its meat. all halal means is that it was killed while saying a prayer in God's name for killing his creature. its cooked the same way.

Sometimes it does look different and that's from the preparation, usually not the actual meat.
if I was unsure, I wouldn't eat it, though I can usually smell pork a mile away (yuck).
