I bought a head of lettuce about a week ago. The bottom of it is starting to turn red. The leaves still look fine though. Is it still okay to eat?

Absolutely safe if you take normal precautions like washing. Head is even safer since the inner leaves are not exposed (protected by the outer leaves which can be disposed of.) Safer than the bag lettuce where all the leaves get exposed to surface areas which are not sterile during there processing.
the red color is merely oxidation reaction kind of like when an apple turns brown when exposed to the air.

Produce is best eaten fresh.

I do not like wasting food so I keep an organic compost with red wrigglers to finish eating natural foods I cannot eat, if your concern is about wastage, find a way to utilize your surplus.

It's still normal however, you should eat it soon if it feels slimy or begin to turn black. For, your own good you should first wash it and cut it of and eat the leaves.

Cut off the bottom and it should be fine.
If it's like slimy or wilty then no.

Thats normal. I would eat it soon. Just always make sure to wash it, and remove all water before dressing it.
