It does sound like more of an anxiety attack. But an anxiety attack can bring on an asmtha attack too. Did you hear yourself wheezing? That would be the major difference. If it happens again, try to talk yourself out of it. Like repeating to yourself to calm down, your fine...it sounds funny but if you get your brain going in the right direction it could stop the anxiety from taking over.

hey i am a respiratory therapist and i know that having an asthma attack can be a very situation but its important to determine between a panic/anxiety attack and an asthma attack. if you are having an asthma attack you will hear yourself making wheezing sounds usually on exhalation. wheezing will accompany an asthma attack until the attack becomes so extreme that your breathing decreases. with panic/anxiety attacks you usually will not hear wheezing but your rate of breathing will increase. hope this helps!

Panic attacks and asthma can feel very similar. I have had both, and it's my experience that asthma attacks feel more like your chest is constricted, and you can't breathe, whereas with a panic attack you just feel more as though you can't *slow* your breathing. I would check with a doctor, but most likely what you had was a panic attack. So you know, panic attacks can lead to asthma attacks, and vice-versa, so I would be cautious when trying to determine one from the other.

I've had exercise induced asthma for about 4 years and started getting panic attacks about 2 years ago. They're both scary and obviously can make you have trouble breathing.
I was recently diagnosed with anxiety disorder; you could have it as well.
