I am planning on buying a ps3 but i only have an hdtv that supports 720p and 1080i, but I mainly want to buy the ps3 for the bluray. I already have an upconversion dvd player that supports 720p and 1080i, so i was wondering does bluray support 1080i? if it does, will it look better than playing dvds on 1080i on my dvd player?

p. s. it wud help if anyone whu already has a ps3 and knows about bluray to answer this question

none of these 3 answers answered my question. it was whether bluray looked better in 1080i or upconverted dvds in 1080i. Is bluray better than dvd when the resolution is in 1080i?

I, too, have:

HDTV - 720p/1080i
Upconvert DVD player - to up 720p/1080i
PS3

If you only want the PS3 for blu-ray DVD viewing, I wouldn't suggest you to buy PS3 until you get yourself a 1080p HDTV first. PS3 cannot "down-convert" blu-ray DVD to 720p or 1080i (at least for now, SONY might have update firmwares later). But your main concern should be your HDTV does not support 1080p. I like my upconverting DVD player, it looks great enough for my 720p HDTV.

I have the PS3 and without an HDMI cable, no matter what the tv, it will project the picture in 480i. But with the HDMI, if you put in a blu-ray dvd, it will project the picture in up to 1080p so if your TV has 720p then thats what it will go up to and project in 720p. But I think with the right cable, you can play blu-ray's on 1080i but its much more common to connect media devices to HDTV's and coordinate using the "p" notation

I used to have a ps3 and I think it only supports 1080i if you use the hdmi cable. Otherwise it will output 720p.

Blue ray does look better. Think about it, Blu-Ray is made for 1080p HDTVs, DVDs are made for 480i, the dvd with the conversion is probably just a little below the quality of blu-ray.
