Many many things can cause the kidneys to fail:

diabetes
constiction of blood vessels that feed the kidneys
dehydration
cysts
stones that completely block it up
mutated cells such as cancerous tumors
trauma or injury to the kidney itself

this is a big question my friend..but what about every thing.

at least you have to know analgesic nephropathy..which is caused by pain killer abuse..

every organ of the body can be affected..specially the brain thats why they go into coma
