My puppy, 9 months old, attacked a 12 pack of diet Dr. Pepper (caffeine free) and drank one or two. He has also been into everything he can find, chips in the cabinet and such. Now he has a little bit of an upset tummy. He has a little diarrhea but is active and very playful. My wife is out of town so this behavior is in protest of her being away and will stop when things get back to normal. Is there anything I can give him for the diarrhea? I know there are some human meds that dogs can take and some that will kill them. I was just wondering if he could take pepto or something.

Called his vet. Vet said Kaopectate was safer than pepto. 1 teaspoon per 20lbs. Vet said it could be pancreatitiis and could be serious and to bring him in tomorrow.

Sorry kelly R you would be incorrect on this one. His behavoir started when he saw she was packing a suitcase. This is not a base instinct this is intelligent, yet immature thought on his behalf. She will be home tomorrow. I do believe this is the cardboard box, paper and diet "decaf" dr. pepper he consumed and the fact he misses his mommy.

Kelly R its funny how people have no clue as to animal behavior. People like you seriously underestimate their pets intelligence both mental and emotional. I really feel sorry for your pets as that is all they will be a pet. Our dog is an intelligent, caring, loving, dovoted member of our family not a base animal that only reacts to the simplest of survival instincts. He shows this every day. And as for leader of the pack, he is aware that is me and minds very well. He also has the ability to think for himself. Doubt your insight has as much to do with pet/animal behavior as it does with some dogmatic notion of human superiority as preached by many fundamentalist religious folk saying that only humans have certain mental functions such as the ability to love and hate and such. Probably an attempt to separate humans from animals to further dispell the nothion of evolution and perpetuate the myth of intelligent design.

Dogs can take pepto, mylanta, and tums. Put the dog on the bathroom scale, or hold dog and do the math, then call the vet for the right dose. They should have no problem giving you this kind of info over the phone. :)

Hope puppy feels better soon.

I know you didn't ask for advice on this, but your dog isn't protesting. He senses a change in the chain of command, and has taken advantage of your presence, not your wife's absense. The behavior will change when you impose yourself as the pack leader.

That being said, I think he is too young for human medication. Contact your vet (a phone call is free); they may tell you to just ride it out with him, or offer another solution. People medication, even over the counters, can be poisonous in the wrong doses, and I wouldn't take the chance with such a young pup.

Try to encourage fresh water, and don't feed for tonight. See how his 'output' looks in the morning, and go from there. Good luck!

PS: Oh, and I'M sorry, but you clearly don't understand dog behavior. If the dog started acting this way when your wife was packing her suitcase, the appropriate thing to do would have been for YOU to correct the behavior. The dog doesn't see you as a leader, and is taking the role himself, NOT lamenting your wife's absence. Funny how people assign human traits, motivations and behaviors to their dogs.

This reminds me of when one of my Goldens was very upset when I went out for the day and got into a bag of fritos. He will be fine. You can give him 1/2 teaspoon of pepto if he's over 50 pounds. If not then call your vet for the right dose.

don't give him dinner tongiht but leave plenty of clean water and you might want to take him outside several times tonight.

I'd be careful with Pepto Bismol. You can give him a tums for an upset tummy though. As for the diarrhea, hopefully it will pass as these things work through his system. There are 5 things that dog's systems cannot tolerate and can actually kill them:

Chocolate
Onions
Grapes
Raisins
Turkey/Chicken skin

Other than that, they do not tolerate junky foods and it will give them diarrhea. Milk will give them terrible diarrhea and you should avoid that.

Since the puppy is active, he will be fine. Your biggest problem now is that you may have to clean up some diarrhea!

at the starting up even respected breeders, kennels and vet's workplace's and animal hospitals can get a streak of kennel cough dealing with them. notwithstanding interpreting what "breeds" you've, you likely were given them from a nasty breeder, in the journey that they do no longer have a temp and are lively, you could proceed the meds, yet kennel cough if it really is what they have typically has to run it really is route, if the doggies are as a lot as this factor on their vaccines, they must be in a position to wrestle it off, from time to time the cough would linger for some months.. maximum vets do no longer prescribe anti biotics for kennel cough until eventually the animal is comprimised circuitously, elderly, has different wellbeing themes, is particularly susceptible or very youthful. stay in contact with you vet and make positive you're taking them in if the situation worsens.

Make some white rice for him and put a little bit of cottage cheese on it. Do not feed him his regular food until his stool is no longer loose. Then add some of his dog food with the rice. Good luck

Yes he can take Pepto and you might also give him pedialyte to keep it from getting dehydrated. Call the vet for the proper doses.

You need to take him to the vet. If he drank pop, his heart should be monitored. Caffine is very bad for dogs.
