Kittens can be taken from their mother between 6 and 8 weeks or until they are eating on their own. Bottle feeding is hard so make sure that the kittens are ready to eat before you take them away. If you have already taken them away from mom and they are too young go to the pet store and purchase KMR (kitten replacemnt milk) until they can eat on their own. If you still have mom and can get her in a carrier take her to the vet when she is done feeding the kittens to be spayed so that there are less babies running around out there with out homes. Your a good person for rescuing the kittens good luck with them

U are indeed kind hearted and full of compassion for rescuing them. I rescued a 3 wks old kitten who lost his mother 12 years ago, he was drowning in the drain during heavy rain. Then 5 years ago i rescued a 2 wk old kitten from a family, he was taken away from its mother when he was only a week old, this family realised that the kitten upset their family dog, they wanted to return him to his mother but couldnt find her. By this time he was almost dying without proper care and feeding. (some people can be irresponsible). Now at this moment i have my healthy 12 year old and 5 year old cat with me.
What i am trying to tell you is that, with proper care you can still save their lives. Send them to the vet for check up and vaccinations, then feed them milk which can be purchased from the vet or pet store.

I have 4 cats and have had 2 lots of litters from them and from my experience the best age is around about 8 weeks. Some peope say 6 or 7 weeks but in my opion it really gives the kitten a good head start in life if you just give it that extra week or so with its mother.

I had a kitten at 6 weeks but ideally I would have prefered to taken him at 8 weeks to allow a couple of weeks extra with his mum but if I hadnt he would have been dead from infected flea bites - this kitten is now the grand age of 13

Typically 6-8 weeks.
I raised a kitten that was a couple of days old when her mother either died or abandoned her.
Give the kittens some kitten formula, and rub their bellies and genitals with q-tips, tissues, ect to get them to go to the bathroom since the mother would normally do this for them.
They have to stay warm, so maybe a heating pad would be good for them and a warm baby blanket to cuddle up with. They should also be kept in a basket.
You'll need to pick them up and cuddle them. Washing them with a damp cloth won't hurt.
Talk to a vet who specializes in cats. That's how I learned what to do.

About 6-8 wks done gradually over a week if possible but is possible to look after and wean kittens onto kitten milk/food from 3.5/4 weeks if the mother is unable to feed for whatever reason. Cimicat kitten milk is full of extra nutrition etc that young kittens need so if you think they look a bit scrawny and need feeding up this is really good. You can buy it from bigger pet stores or your vet. Also very important not to use cows milk, or adult cat milk/food. Also to flea and worm them as well. I'll stop now:)

After 6 weeks

The kittens are weened around six weeks. However, if you want the cat to be particularly friendly and personable you should handle it often before that age.

As for rescued or found kittens of earlier ages, you can often, and very successfully, bottle feed kittens a prepared formula that is found at nearly any pet store.

Foundlings often miss part of the normal training that a mother cat teaches but the kittens seem to grow up quite nicely anyway.

ALWAYS take them to the vet straight away. Talk to them and they'll guide you well.

You could run the kittens by a humane society or animal control. There should be someone there who can tell you the kittens' age by the tooth development.

If you find they are under six weeks you may have to bottle feed them and feed them meat to wean them - not dry food.

If they are eight weeks it is time for a vet visit to worm them and start their series of kitten shots.

Sounds like you and bf are "mum" now so you have to do what's necessary for their health and survival.

normally you should wait until the kittens are at least 8 weeks to take them away from their mother. The longer you wait the better it is for the kittens. My cat was taken away from her mother too soon and she has some problems from it. Nothing really big luckily but she has certain habits that numerous vets say is because of being taken away too young. For instance, she licks constantily. She will lick me, my clothes, my bedding, towels, furniture, anything.
