My mom is a diabetic as well, and recently a had a stomach virus. Because she was not eating as much food she did skip on the insulin she takes in the evening and her body seemed to be okay with it. But every diabetic is different and i would highly suggest she check with her diabetic physician. Hope she feels better soon!

I agree with everyone in that this is a question that needs to be established with her diabetes care team.

In general, insulin needs may need to be lowered with diarehea and vomiting. However, different illnesses can cause an increase in insulin needs, and there is also no real way to predict how a particular person will respond to an illness. Some may need less, others more. It may even fluctuate back and forth.

Do not EVER completely stop taking the insulin. This can lead to DKA (diabetic coma).

The key is frequent testing of blood sugar and checking to make sure she is not developing ketones. If she has moderate to large ketones and is vomitting, she needs to go to the emergency room. The key is to try and keep her BG in range as much as possible, and to have less than small ketones in her urine. You need to test frequently and give smaller and more frequent amounts of insulin. If her blood glucose is low, try having her drink some regular Ginger Ale (NOT diet). You should also have glucagon and glucose gel on hand.

Please call her doctor and diabetes nurse to get information about her particular case.

when my daughter is ill her blood sugars shoot up high then we have to give her more insulin but if she is vomit ting her sugars go so low she is hypo all the time so we give her less insulin.do you have a diabetic care nurse who can give accurate help with your wife's reading and doses.it would be safer than on here.hope that helps tho.no matter what never stop food never stop insulin.if she cant eat cos she is too ill she may need to be admitted to hospital on a drip, but you could try drinks with sugar in little and often just to stop her going hypo all time if she is low from not eating.
