Congratulations on moving into your new digs! How fun! Here are some ideas for some appetizers that I have successfully utilized in the past:

1. Cheese platter with grapes: Mushroom brie, Manchenga, and
Dill Havarti with sesame seed crackers and seedless
grapes
2. Salami Rollups: take your favorite salami and spread with
goat cheese, place a small or 1/2 of a medium cornichon in
the center and skewer with a toothpick
3. Hot Artichoke and Crab Dip: 2 cans artichoke hearts, drained
and chopped, 1 can diced green chilis, 1 can lump crab meat
drained and rinsed, 1 cup mayonaise, 1 tsp hot sauce, 1/8 tsp
garlic powder, 1 T lemon juice, 2 cups good shredded parm-
esan cheese. Blend the above and bake at 375 degrees until
bubbly and lightly browned. Serve with blue corn tortilla chips
4. Asparagas and prosciutto rollups: Take medium stalks of
asparagas and peel the bottoms. Steam to crisp tender and
cool. Wrap with thin slices of prosciutto
5. Cantelope and Black Forest Ham: Slice ripe cantelope, sans
the seeds, into thin slices and wrap thin slices of ham around
each piece. Skewer if necessary
6. Fresh fruit platter with sour cream dressing: Use pineapple
spears, strawberries, melon, and bananas (soaked in pine-
apple juice or lemon). For dressing, use 1 cup sour cream,
1 tsp vanilla, 3 T brown sugar, 1 T pineapple juice, 1 tsp
chopped fresh mint and chill for about 1 hour before serving.
7. Cream cheese chili dip: 1 pkg cream cheese softened, 1 can
chunky chili with beans, 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar
cheese, 3T chopped cilantro. Spread cream cheese in
baking dish or pie pan. Top with chili and cheese. Nuke for
1 - 2 minutes until heated. Top with cilantro. Serve with
tortilla chips.

Have fun! And, by the way, the turkey that criticised you for moving into an apartment has been reported for unnecessary harshness and judgementalism! What a rude, mean spirited attitude!

Champagne with a pear slice or small (melon baller size) scoop of sherbet.

Small tumblers filled with ice, a jigger or rum or vodka and a stir stick make from a chocolate dipped asparagus spear.

Baked Brie, topped with a caramel sauce, sprinkled with berries and served with sliced fruit.

Mini crab cakes, served with a spicy cranberry apple relish instead of cocktail or tartar sauce.

Asparagus tips rolled in pancetta and then in puff pastry. A curry dipping sauce would be wonderful with this.

Fondue is always a blast and creates a natural gathering place for your guests.

Lavages, with cream cheese and smoked salmon.

Tried and true, every one likes cheese. A merlot wine cheese on black toast points.

A goose liver pate over a water cracker, so easy to make.

Classic, quarter sized blinis with a dab of sour cream and some fine caviar.

Have fun. If you don't know these recipes just google foodnetwork.com. The cranapple relish for the crab cakes is found under a pumpkin soup recipe.

PS, don't pay attention to the guy above, he may not be aware that apartments are also owned, not rented, and that in many metropolitan cities apartments are considered no different than houses.

They guy who said that moving into an apartment is not an accomplishment is a jerk - and a dumb one at that.

Finding a great place, moving all your stuff, and being able to afford the rent are all accomplishments. Have fun celebrating!

I highly recommend using store bought stuff where you can - you'll be busy enough getting the place looking fabulous and hosting guests in a new place to cook everything from scratch.

foodnetwork.com has great recipes. rachel ray, though a somewhat annoying tv personality, makes a lot of easy recipes that can be made quickly and tweaked to fit your tastes.

Foods that are eaten at room temp are great - that way they don't get gross after a few hours of party.

Pasta salad with a vinagrette dressing.

A big basket of crostini with a variety of toppings on the side: pesto, bruschetta, olive tapenade, onion chutney, etc - can be bought and served in pretty bowls so people can make their own and they don't get doggy sitting out pre-made.

roasted and spiced nuts - can be easily made ahead

brownies/cookies/truffles (homemade truffles are suprisingly easy to make and you can make them ahead too!)

you can also make sangria or another 'signature' drink to up the sophistication.

at mine i put out a make your own sundae station halfway through. A few kinds of ice cream, a bunch of toppings, and you're done. everyone loves ice cream!

remember to have on hand, lots of ice, extra paper towel, nice paper napkins and plastic cups.

empty your garbage cans and put clean towels in your bathroom! :) and have a place to put peoples coats.

Go to a gourmet cheese shop and taste. There are so many great ones ou there. One of my favs is Piave. 3 different ones is usually a good number amounts depend on the number of guests.
Greek mixed olives are great alongside with assorted plain style crackers, not flavored want the cheese to stand out. throw some grapes around it or sliced pears.
Dolmas or stuffed grape leaves are excellent and you can find them already made in a lot of delis.creme fraiche for those.
Barely steamed asparagus great wrapped in prosciutto serve with an herbed mayo for dipping whatever fresh herbs you like with lemon , salt, pepper and mayo
Mini quiches are great buy them frozen and pop them in the oven.

cheese cake is a good finish with some fresh berries in a organic sugar sauce just mix the berries and sugar and let set for a little while in the fridge

Sweet & Sour meatball or stroganoff meatballs. You can serve rice or noodles on the side or use as appetizers. Nice thing about these - easy to make ahead (or buy large bag of pre-made meatballs) and keep warm in crock-pot on buffet. I used to make my own sauce but GFS (if you live in US) has big cans of pre-made sauce that is excellent. I buy their 5 pound bag of meatballs and one large can of sauce. Instant dish - as good or better than homemade! Add a nice salad and a variety of desserts. Maybe a chicken dish or sliced ham if you want more than one entree idea.
