His work may have disability, workman's comp or Social Security Income if he does not have that much in assets.

Most states have a program called SDI (State Disability Insurance). If he checks his paystubs, he will find that he has been paying into the fund out of each paycheck. He will need to apply for the SDI benefits. They aren't much but will bring in some money. Also, depending on who he worked for he may have some vacation, holiday, or sick time built up and be able to use that for income. If he was paying into a 401k plan, he could get a one time emergency withdrawal to pay off some of his debts to reduce his monthly expenses. If he was paying into or the company had a retirement plan he could also get disability retirement through his company. This usually takes time to arrange so the SDI, or 401k funds may have to be used while waiting for this to be done.

Has he clamed for housing benifits and disability benifits? Some times that can help as sick pay isn't much. Also to help him stay mind active and earn some extra cash, he could go for a job (card making, packing) job which he can do at home. Most of those places deliver what you need to your door and pay you on the amount you get done. There are no set hours and no rush so if he need to go to the Doc's he can just go.

Hope this helps

Hope your mate gets better soon.

That's the 'wonder' of liberalised social security. You don't HAVE to pay, but you won't also GET paid. Over here, we have to pay, but they don't let you in the cold.
