I had a heart attack and double bypass surgery 6 years ago. I take all my medications, get regular check-ups and feel fine. I also take 320mg of bayer aspirin every day. I've talked to one doctor that says I should continue to take the 320mg because of my heart condition, but another one tells me to take 81mg will work just fine.

What dose should one be taking with my past condition?

The doctor should know. I have heard that 81 mg.,a baby aspirin, is all you need...Too much aspirin can lead to stomach trouble. If in doubt, you can always get a second opinion...good luck.

Aspirin in taken for heart conditions because it has the property of "thinning" the blood and preventing the formation of clots which may lead to a heart attack.

Unfortunately, aspirin also has a tendency to cause stomach problems such as bleeding and ulceration if taken long-term, particularly in larger doses.

Obviously it's difficult to advise on a particular issue without knowing your full case history but in general the blood-thinning effects of aspirin will work just fine at the 81 mg dosage and have the added benefit of less liklihood of side effects. My father-in-law has been on low dose aspirin for a number of years now (50mg in his case) and it works just fine!

Well, when the second opinion is different than the first, it's logic to me to ask for third. But you want find answer here, cause the doctor should have the right info on your status. But, aspirin is quite safe to use, so even if the dossage is not appropriate, so you should't be worry too much

In the past 325mg Aspirin was the recommended dose but recently it has been found that 81mg baby Aspirin is just as good as the 325mg tab. 81mg is good for you and to provide any extra anti-platelet activity, you will need a different medication like Plavix or Dipyridamole
