There are over 100 different kinds of HPV and only about 30 of those kinds are sexually transmitted. All the other 70+ kinds are not sexually transmitted.

HPV can cause common warts which can occur on the hands, feet, elbows, knees, etc. It can also cause flat warts and plantar warts. All of these are passed by non sexual ways.

But, it also causes genital warts and cervical cancer. It can cause penile cancer and anal cancer too but both of these are really rare. All of these are caused by some sort of sexual contact. You don't need to have sex though to get HPV! HPV can be spread by just direct skin to skin contact. So even if a couple didn't have sex and just "dry humped" it can still infect the other person.

It's always possible that either one of you could have had the virus for years and years (before you even got together) and just never knew about it. There is no test for men to detect HPV, so maybe your husband had it all along and never even realized it. Or, you might have even had it for years and never realized it until you were just diagnosed.

I've had HPV for 6 years now and I developed genital warts from them about a year ago. If I never would have went and got a pap smear 6 years ago I would have never known I had the virus until I developed the warts. I would have gone 5 years without realizing I was carrying HPV. By that time I probably would have had to have a hysterectomy, because the same year I was diagnosed with HPV I developed cervical cancer from it. That is why is is SO important women get their yearly pap smears! It is the best thing they can do to detect any early signs of cervical cancer, like abnormal cells on the cervix.

Good luck to you!

I agree with the above. HPV is really really common and can be present from birth. This just means you qualify for more regular cervical smears... unpleasant but useful in cancer prevention.

can actually be present from birth, transmitting from mom to baby as one passes through the birth canal. can carry the virus for life. any sexual contact as a teenager can lead to infection, even when condoms are consistently used..
