I'm a type 1 daibetic, have been for 34 years since I was 9, and have been through the procedure twice already. And, 1st Responder is right, that transplant centers often have support groups for people awaiting transplant, and for those who have undergone it already. These groups usually meet at a conference room at the transplanting hospital.
As for the operation itself, it's really nothing to be afraid of. In total, it will probably take about five hours in all to complete, and they will make an incision near the lower abdomen, on whichever side they'll be implanting the kidney. The new kidney will b e placed into the peritoneal cavity, and the blood vessels grafted onto your existing vessels. It's actually a little tougher on the living donor, if you have someone donating a kidney to you. You'll probably be in the hospital for about five days to a week, for recovery and to ensure that the kidney is functioning properly and that your immunosuppressive medications are getting adjusted, as to prevent rejection while not overmedicating. After you're discharged form the hospital, you'll porbably have to go back to the hospital's post-transplant clinic, three days a week at first, then maybe two, tapering it down until, eventually you're making annual visits so that they can chart your progress. And, trust me, you'll feel MUCH better than you have before the transplant, although at first you may be a little limited in your activities, in order to let the incision heal sufficiently. Best of luck to you!
