I don't have any idea why this happens, but everytime my son gets excited, or is wrestling with daddy... and Everytime he starts laughing, everytime he inhales he makes a bad gasping sound... He doesn't have asthma, and there is no wheezing in his chest, but he does this all the time... What could be causing this??? I am concerned because he has never had this problem before, and it is only when he is exerting himself.... (that is why I had previously though about asthma.) He is 2 years old, and has a clean medical history, other than reoccuring ear infections.. (which have been taken care of with tubes...) He is not getting a cold, nor has he been sick.. Any ideas thank you.

Most of the time when having an asthma attack you will hear wheezing. If the attack is very severe you might not hear anything because the airways are so constricted that very little air is passing. If the sound he makes is more of a high-pitched crowing sound it could be termed stridor. This is caused by some sort of inflammation or obstruction of the upper airway. If you have already discussed this problem with your primary care doctor and he isn't treating this, I would recommend taking your son to a pediatric pulmonologist. They will do some tests to determine the integrity of his upper airway. Perhaps there is some stricture which is irritated by his activity. Be persistent, this problem could worsen as he gets older, or with increased activity.

Try having you pediatrician check for esophageal constrictions or mitro valve constrictors. Also see where those ear infections are going in his sinuses and also in his immune system. Keep looking, ask every question you can think of and don't take no or "it will be fine/he will grow out of it" if you feel that there is something wrong. Your instincts are his best medicine.

this could be exercised induced asthma so you need to get it checked out by a dr and have an inhaler handy if this problem persists

Has the doctor checked his blood? He might be slightly anemic and have a low red blood cell count. This would cause him to be short of breath and gasping when he exerted himself.
