Pus leaking from your sexual organs or a burning sensation when you urinate are both good indicators and I am sure there are more.

You don't. Syphilis is the only disease that carries a tale-tale sign; a chancre, which is an open sore that is painless. However, the chancre can appear inside the vagina or under foreskin and go undetected. Gonorrhea can cause a burning sensation during urination in men, but woman are usually symptomless.
If you suspect you have been exposed to an STD get tested. You can do this for free at the board of health. You'll be given a number to protect confidentiality and a telephone number to call for results. GO GET TESTED!
Treatments are usually very simple involving antibiotics most of the time. The male exam may be painful, depending on what is expected a swab (a long thin q-tip) will be used to get a smear from inside the urethra. Unfortunately the only route is through the tiny opening in the head of the penis. Still, untreated STD's can result in sterility, serious illness, blindness and even death. I'd say avoiding that was worth the discomfort of any exam. That and ensuring that you are not passing diseases along to your partner.

The only way to be 100% sure either way is to be tested. One thing you don't want to do is damage the potiental to be a parent someday. Untreated STD's can do damage to both male and female reproductive organs. Most STD's in males have no symtpoms, years later when older and wanting children men find out that an STD years prior has affected their ability for the testicles to manufacture sperm cells. I would make an appointment to see a physician right away, or your local STD clinic. It happens, just remember to learn something from every bad experience you have, and don't repeat them. Good luck

you don't unless you have symptoms but even then its just a guess. until you have clear results then its only a guess. you should be tested anytime something isn't right or you have been told that your partner may have something. HIV testing-yearly if not twice a year
