I assume you mean "When I was Puerto Rican" the book by Esmeralda Santiago.?

This is a memoir of her early life thru the eyes of herself as a pre-teen which follows her early years on the island and her subsequent move to New York City. It's a very good book that delves into Ms. Santiago's struggle to find her cultural identity.
