I am taking a class and it was mentioned that there might be a gender specific STD. But we were unable to come up with any examples. Can anyone provide some help?

All STDs affect both men and women.

There is more concern about HPV and women though because HPV can cause cervical cancer, which is the second most common cancer in women (after breast cancer). HPV is responsible for more than 90% of cervical cancer cases. In 2006, about 10,000 women in the US alone were diagnosed with cervical cancer and about 4,000 of them died! Obviously, this only affects females because men don't have a cervix.

HPV does however cause penile cancer, which would obviously only affect a man, but, penile cancer is EXTREMELY rare and is not always caused by HPV. About 1 in 100,000 develop penile cancer a YEAR!

***Also the girl above me is completely wrong. Men are not just "carriers" of HPV, they are also affected by the virus. Men can develop genital warts from HPV (my boyfriend did!). Men usually don't realize they have HPV because there is no test for them to detect HPV, but they are still directly affected by the virus.

There is a new vaccine out called Gardasil. It's for cervical cancer. This is the type that you get through sexual intercorse. I guess this could be an example.
