Every once in a while, my friend buses home from work with me. The bus is usually full by the time we get on, and there is a faint smell of cigarette smoke on him when he sits next to me. I am a non-smoker and as far as I know I'm pretty healthy, so am I being affected by the smell of smoke he carries in any way? (He smokes about half a pack a day)

If he is smoking while sitting next to you, yes. But if you are just smelling the nasty cigarette after smell that lingers on his clothes, no.

Just to let you know, that isn't second hand smoke, but the last responder is so wrong, it's not funny. 2nd hand smoke is the smoke that comes from the lit tip of the cigarette that hasn't been filtered. It wouldn't take 1000 years to cause the same amount of damage of a smoker of 20 years. Granted, since we aren't getting the filtered and unfiltered smoke it wouldn't cause as much damage, but the difference is so minimal that a person who lives in a house with a smoker who isn't a smoker has just as great a chance of getting cancer as the smoker.

In case you can't tell, I have a serious problem with ignorance.

The smell of smoke probably isn't healthy.. but what is? Bus fumes aren't either.. There are tons of fumes and toxic gases produced by manufacturers and cars that you dont know about! This is coming from someone who has lived with a smoker (my dad) and he used to smoke in the house WITH the windows closed for like 14-15 years.. Now i have him smoking outside :) Compared of what i have breathed in.. your fine.. I have trouble breathing and stuff when i run and i dont think my dads habit has helped any but he does not want to stop and theres no way i can ever convince him..
Well my point is.. your fine , dont worry about it

NOT A CHANCE IS THAT SECOND HAND SMOKE. Breathing in smoke while someone is smoking next to you=second hand smoke. The damage done to a smoker who has smoked for 20 years, for that same amount of damage through second hand smoke would take 1000 years. If you don't like the smell, i'd just let himknow.

If he were actually smoking next to you, or you were inhaling actual cigarette smoke by being near him when he's smoking, then my answer would be yes. However, by just smelling the "...faint smell of cigarette smoke on him...", I would have to say absolutely NO way would this affect your health.

I'm not too sure about that but I just hate the smell of smokers. If only they knew that they actually stunk!!!! I used to smoke (quit 2 yrs ago) and never realised until I quit how gross the smell is.

I don't think it will be doing u harm health wise but thumbs up if you can tolerate the smell.... I can't

I don't know if it's necessarily unhealthy to just smell the scent of smoke on him but I think the smell of smoke is absolutely disgusting. I can't stand being around smokers. If they only realized how horrible they smell!

Yes, it still has effect on other people. I hate the smell of cigarette...it stinks so bad! There's a high chance for him to get sick from it and so are you. You may get cancer one day...because of second hand smoke.

Good grief - no.

That's like saying you can become ill from smelling rotting food driving by you in a garbage truck.

Smoke is a particulate matter (that's why the smell lingers on clothes) but unless he is lighting up next to you, you should be safe.

Yes, its second hand smoke, and in most cases is even more deadly than the smoke that they inhale, Its almost as if you were smoking too yourself. Try to tell to to stop smoking near your or even better yet, walk away from them.

yes, it is bad.
One, second hand smokers are more at risks of cancer than the first hand smokers. Two, smoking is really bad for your health and not good for your health. Do you know why your friend has that smell? .......because when he/she smokes, his/her body absorbs the smoke.
