Most people have already given you the standard answer, so I guess I want to say something a little different.

Vegetarianism is a lifestyle change which involves cutting out meat and fish from your diet. It is a step in the right direction towards reducing the cruelty suffered by animals but it does not remove you from the processes of dairy farming and egg production which, free range, organic or not result in the unnecessary deaths of many animals.

Veganism is a complete overhaul of your lifestyle to eliminate cruelty in all its forms. It goes beyond just not eating meat, fish, dairy, eggs, honey etc. and makes the step to avoid all animal products and products that have been tested on animals. It is also tied up with respect for the environment and a wish for fair trade. Veganism is not a "cult" as so many meat eaters like to tell you. It is not a freak show either. It is, however a truly cruelty free way of life which, if followed correctly can be healthy, fulfilling and wonderful.

As for being ill-tempered, well, only when people pigeon-hole us and try to tell us we're freakish, ill, pale faced and stupid and that's a right which I think everyone can reserve.
