People waiting for a heart in the USA are listed on a national waiting list of potential recipients. They are listed at the transplant center where they plan to have surgery. UNOS - United Network for Organ Sharing - maintains the national waiting list in Richmond, Virginia. This site shows you how many people are currently on the wait list by the minute:

You didn't give us a question but as some insight, the list really has no bearing other than to let the institute know you need one!
The receipient is based on severity of condition, donor matches and availability, and the institution you have chosen for the transplant. It changes on a minute by minute basis! People have been called to their respective transplant center only to be turned back on arrival because someone else jumped higher on the list due to immediate need! The ratio of those on the list requiring and waiting for a donor to those who actually ever receive a donor is staggering!
