I have a Donvier ice cream maker. There is a cylinder that goes in the freezer (overnight) and when it is frozen solidly, the ingredients go in it. A paddle turns the mixture every 2 minutes and it is done in 20 minutes. It will be on the soft side, so transfer it to a bowl and freeze it.
However ... ice cream can be made without an ice cream maker. It just takes a lot longer. You can make it in a stainless steel, glass or plastic mixing bowl (one that will go in the freezer) covered with plastic wrap. The trick is that every hour, you must stir the mixture because the sugar will set in the centre. So, you have to stir it up to redistribute everything every hour until it becomes semi-frozen. You can get recipes on the internet just by searching for "ice cream recipes", but if you decide to buy a Donvier or any ice cream maker, a booklet with instructions and recipes will be included.

First you need an ice cream maker. The electric ones take a lot less effort. Then you need some ice and rock salt. Find an ice cream recipe on the web or in a cook book, mix the ingredients and pour into the ice cream maker tin. Put the lid on it, sit it down in the ice cream maker bucket, put the crank on and pour ice and rock salt all around it. Turn it on and let it sit for the recommended amount of time.

You don't NEED an icecream maker!! Well, usually not. I make icecream this way!
First I blend ice in the blender
Then in a bowl I mix hot
cocoa powder and milk
When the ice is blended
well, I pour all the ice in the
bowl with the the chocolatey
mixture and I mix it a lot
Then I let it thaw just for
like 3 minutes
Then I put the mixture into
a different bowl or a
fancy cup
If you want, you can put
a topping like chopped
nuts or something on top!
ENJOY!!!

Do you have a ice cream maker?
1 pint heavy cream
1 pint of whole milk
1 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla
Put in your machine and plug it in or crank away.
Remove from machine, put in a plastic bowl, cover tightly, and freeze for 12 hours or more. OR just eat it like soft serve right out of the machine.
Snow cream is good too.
Gather about 2 quarts of FRESH snow. (no yellow spots, please)
1/2 to 1 cup of sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
and just enough milk, or condensed milk, or skip the sugar and use sweetened condensed milk, to make it the right texture. Just add a little milk or what ever at a time, stirring constantly. Yum!

There's really no way to make it by hand. You need an ice cream maker and a supply of milk and ice that you can put in it. Hershey's syrup is a good thing to have as well just in case you want to make chocolate ice cream as well. Good luck!
