If the URI involves bronchitis, it may take a few months at the most. Complete your antibiotic regimen as prescribed and if you don't see any improvement, you may need to have a different antibiotic prescribed. Another thing that may help you through this and help you recover quicker is to run a humidifier in your sleep area. It helps to keep your nasal membranes moist . If your sinus/ nasal membranes become very dry, they tend to excrete mucus, which in turn can travel down the throat, causing basic cold symptoms. Feel better!

if the infection is bacterial, one should begin to feel better within 24-48 hours after taking antibiotics. if the infection is viral, the symptoms will last 3-21 days. viral illnesses can treated by over-the-counter meds for the individual symptoms.
it is possible to have viral and bacterial infection at the same time, though. this would prolong all symptoms.
