I think it will be fantastic to not have smoking in pubs and resturants, Ireland was a pleasure and nobody seemed to mind, they just stepped outside.

The pubs will not close because of the non-smoking ban, but they will, when the alcohol ban comes into force. Not before time, I say, fair enough, smoking isn't the wisest thing to do, but on a scale of 1-10 it increases the load on the medical service, about 2-3, on the other hand, Alcohol increases the load on the medics to 10+ it is an absolute poison!! If it was invented today, it would be a class A drug, and banned outright. Not many women get beat up by their men, because there are no cigs in the house, need I say more??
By the way, do you drive a car?? hahhahahahahahahahhah

Of COURSE the pubs will close. Don't you see where this is going? Smoking is banned because it's hazardous and costs the taxpayers money in the form of health care. Guns are banned for the same reason. What about alcohol? Doesn't it cause health problems? Drunk driving? Cirrhosis? Alcohol is next to be banned, so what will the pubs do? It'll be like going to the senior citizen center to play pool and darts. Pretty soon, they'll ban water because it drowns and fire because it burns. We can't be TOO SAFE!

Don't see why pubs should close after all a lot of non smokers will visit them if a smoking ban is in place. They are also a meeting place were everyone gets to see their friends and have a good old natter etc.No there's no reason why they should close, probably do better than before the ban.

As you wrote, Annette, people just deal with it..
At first, here in Italy, i was a little worried, but now, not only you don't smell like a ashtray anymore, but you also smoke less, especially in the winter..

About your question i'm shure pubs with smoker areas will get some more customers but al least here none had to close 'cause of the new law.. yet

People will get used to it. They'll maybe moan for a while but then they'll find something else to moan about! I used to work in a hotel in scotland and they found their restaurant business & by default the bar business actually increased when the smoking ban came in.

As a smoker, I love to go shopping with my husband and stop off for a drink and cigarette, that will not happen when the ban comes in and it will be a small pleasure that I will no longer be able to enjoy!!!!

l'm from Tralee in lreland.Smoking ban didn't cause any pubs to close here. In my opinion it is way better now.
You can go home and not have to wash your hair before you go to bed.
Just positive no matter how you look at it.
