My husband and I recently became vegetarian. We dislike the abuse of animals and we are trying to eat healthier. Any good recipes, cookbooks, etc.? Thanks

As far as your comment on eating 3 animals, I really dont' mind. I don't have a problem with you eating meat. Enjoy your steak.

First advice.

Do lots of research & reading.

You would be surprised what there is availale out there.

Plus go to the food companies website, they usually post which products have animal products, which are vegetarian, & which are vegan.

There are magazines that you can subscribe too that will give you monthly news and new recipes ideas.

Here's a good one:

www.vegetariantimes.com

Try to cook your pasta, rice & veggies on organic vegetable broth - it adds wonderful flavor and makes the meals enjoyable.

Plus making your own vegetarian soups are great & freezing the leftovers for a quick meal is a time saver.

This company I buy boxed rice from. Most of their products are vegetarian, but research there are a few with beef or chicken flavoring. There almond rice is amazing!

www.neareast.com

This next company sells what is the vegan/vegetarian version of ramen noddle soups. Full of flavor and great in the winter time.

www.thaikitchen.com

Amy's is a company that has frozen/organic meals. They are great!! There hasn't been a place where I can't find some of their meals. Very good in taste and good for protein with their beans and tofu.

www.amys.com

Last, there is Annie's they have soups & pasta dishes like mac and cheese (with no animal product). I buy there pasta and macaroni dishes for my kids. Plus they have cheese crackers and other items all vegetarian. I love this company & even have their bumper stickers posted at my house. Check them out!

Hope that is some starters for your new vegetarian life style!

Enjoy!! :)

Congratulations. I have been Veg. for few years now and I know the websites and cookbooks quite well. There are a variety of vegetarian recipes. When you become vegetarian, you should try to learn how to cook with Tofu, beans... make it interesting. You can go toward Indian cuisine, Thai, Chinese, Mexican...for inspiration. Experiment with Tempeh, Seitan, Tofu, Veggie meat subsititute in your old recipes....
These are some good website:

Good cookbooks:
The Tofu cookery, Becoming vegetarian, How it all vegan,
La Dolce Vegan, The Vegan paradigm, Juice for life cookbook,
The giant tofu cookbook., Linda Mc Cartney cookbooks.

There are many good books I am leaving out, but the info I give you should help you start. Try to browse your public libraries and borrow some Veg. Cookbooks and just photocopy the recipes you like.

Good luck

Eat balanced meals which are high in protein. If you are a vegan make sure that the non meat products are this way. keep in touch with a reliable doctor and check vegetarian stores that have been around for a long time.

Pizza is a dish to be eaten on its own, without any kind of accompaniment, even if you have salad, you're supposed to have it as a starter, and not at the same time. As for those people who serve it with chips or baked beans, what can I say? We haven't got a bad gastronomical reputation for nothing. Nuff said.

Hi, My sister-n-law became a Vegan vegetarian about three or so months ago. She was having trouble finding recipes as well because she wasn't use to cooking without meat. We came across allrecipes.com which has tons of vegitarian pasta recipies, vegetarian breakfast recipes, vegetarian chili, soup and stew recipes, vegitarian grilling recipes, It has vegetarian side dishes, main dishes, tofu recipes, appetizers and it even has some vegetarian articles. This site is awesome!! It has reviews of the recipes so you can see what other people thought about them. Also try ebay for some vegetarian cookbooks. I bought my sister in law 5 of them and paid $5.76!!

You want to eat healthy? Vegetarian is not the way. Organtic foods is the way. Let me ask you a question have you ever eaten an apple now days and have it turn brown before you are done with it? When I was growing up they did. Now they don't, what do you think that is doing to your body and this is just one food, think of all the rest.
