Hello all. Ive ben seeing this girl for a while. I like her a lot. We have gotten pretty close. We havent had sex yet but it was coming onto the agenda if you get my drift. She told me a few days ago that she has a strain of HPV which has caused cervical dysplacia. Having sex with her means I will more than likely contract the HPV. Im not sure what to do. Advice appreciated.

Go to www.healthandhpv.com or search "HPV for Dummies". This is an extremely helpful and thoughtful website put together by a young woman who has HPV and should help to answer any of your questions.
It's easy for people to come up with quick answers like "dont have sex" if they haven't been diagnosed with an STD but being diagnosed with something like HPV quickly changes your perceptions and makes you a little more thoughtful.
HPV is awful mostly because the only way to test for it is through either an abnormal result on a pap smear or the visible appearance of genital warts. Otherwise there is no way to know whether you or a partner has it. Not only that but condoms for the most part do little to protect against HPV. So, even if you both do the responsible thing and go get yourselves tested and use condoms, etc...there is still a good chance you will get it at some point if you have multiple sex partners! In fact...the only way to be absolutely sure you wont get HPV from your partner is if he/she is a virgin (and even then there is a tiny little chance you can get it from underwear or towels so...they might still have it!!!)
I dont mean to say that HPV is no big deal, it can lead to serious complications one of which is cancer but those instances are rare and I think that most of the horror of it is in it's shock factor of being an..... STD! (play scary music here). I view it kind of like chicken pox...pretty much everyone gets it and sometimes it can lead to complications, but when it doesn't (which is most of the time) the symptoms go away and, although the virus stays in your system, you pretty much forget all about it.
HPV is sometimes described as the "common cold" of STD's and up to 80% of the population has been/will be infected at some point in their sexual careers and most OB/GYN's tell patients not to bother with telling their partners because it is so common.
So first of all, you need to thank your very sweet, brave, and thoughtful girlfriend for telling you in the first place...that means she cares alot about you and wants to have a meaningful relationship. Then go to the website above and learn all about HPV and then make a thoughful and informed decision.

Hi there. The new evidence of HPV (human papilloma virus) has revealed about 100 strains. Just 5 years ago, HPV was thought to just cause sexual warts by one strain. It is estimated that up to 90% of all sexually active people have been exposed to one or more strains of HPV. That is why the new vaccine for women is recommended for 19 and under since after 19, most women will already be exposed to the virus. Since with a DNA test of the HPV has revealed that she has a strain responsible for cervical cancer, this could expose you to future penile cancer (theoretically). Cancer of the penis is so rare. I doubt there is a real connection. Not enough studies have been done. You probably have the virus (statistically speaking). Most strains clear up on their own and because of it's prevelance, I've noticed that it is not a reportable STD unless sexual warts are present. There wouldn't be enough resources to notify everyone and when being checked for STD's HPV is not routinely checked unless sexual warts are present.I'm in the same predicament as your friend, so my policy now is no bare back sex. NO glove;no love since most of my lovers have been a lot younger than me. It gives me peace of mind. Give her support and encouragement. Serial pelvic exams are nerve-racking. Tell her there is a link to cervical cancer but it is not absolute. She's upset;believe me. Experimenting with other forms of sex has helped me also. Wear your condom and you should be fine. Just love safe and you will find your peace there.

There are numerous strains of HPV. Most of them are harmless, causing genital warts or with no symptoms at all. Some strains though are problematic and causes cervical cancer in women, among others. Your new girl probably has the latter. But this can be treatable.
HPV is VERY CONTAGIOUS. You can have it by oral, vaginal or anal sex. You can use a condom...but doesn't guarantee that you wont get it. Having a consult and treatment with your doctor is the best course of action. Ask your MD about HPV Vaccines.

I'll start off Simple. WEAR A CONDOM!!!! That's your best choice for protection, and it wouldn't hurt to use one of those vaginal sleeve thingys too. A.E. (Female Condom) The last thing you'd want to do is contract HPV. I'm sure if you really care about her, and she feels the same way about you, you'll try this, or you'll come up with something. Good Luck, My Friend. I hope you don't catch it, and I'm sorry to hear that she is in that position.

If you love her, then you'll invest in the condom factory and protect yourself. Condoms do not protect 100% as you can also get the virus from just grinding against eachother with no symptoms to be seen.

You need to be sure you use protection because if you don't you will most definitely contract HPV.

HPV isn't dangerous. Use condoms and you should be ok. If you are worried about it, see a doctor and ask about it.
