you only fast for glucose tolerance test. yes you can drink water. and you fast 10-12 hours.

If you are having fasting blood work done because you are Diabetic, then you must avoid the intake of food from midnight until after the blood is drawn, the next day.
You may drink water only if necessary.

No water. The time depends on the tests. 8 hours for most things but cholesterol should be 12 hours. The extra four hours dropped my bad cholesterol over 100 points.

Usually 8, which is why it is best to do it in the morning when you wake up. And yes you can drink water unless told otherwise.
