I am so sorry for you and your whole family that your mother is so sick. Just spend as much time with her as you can; hold her hand and say "I love you" a lot. The doctors may be able to tell you about how much longer she has, but even doctors do a lot of guessing, as the human body is sometimes more resilient than anyone thinks it will be. But I'm afraid it doesn't look that great for her.

This is a very hard time for you. <<<>>>

Please see the links below and give the woman room to recover comfortably...she will need to be to herself in order not to embarrass herself testing and trying the new post-operative procedure. Being in the hospital is enough to drain one of ordinary energy and hers is challenged by the COPD, too. The nurses will tend to her getting out of bed when it is ordered by the physician. Try to be patient and learn more about her problems at the sites below...to reduce yours and possibly her anxiety. It may be of interest of her to have someone read the material to her (if possible) so that she knows and understands what is expected of her during the recovery and rehabilitation process. Also, if it has not yet been suggested...provide her with a pad and pencil to scribble on ... (sometimes it is forgotten...that she may need to communicate with something other than her voice). A trach will affect her ability to speak clearly. Ask questions that a nod will surfice...for example...instead of saying, "Mom, how are you feeling, today..." Say, "Are you feeling better, today?"

I hope she feels better soon...she is blessed with a loving, concerned family. I hope this helps during this challenging time.

I'm sorry, that is so hard. Talk to the doctor. He/She will tell you how much time your mom has left if she is that close to dying. The tracheotomy may not be a good indicator.
