Flautas are strips of shredded beef arranged on a tortilla and rolled into taco shape but a really thin one so of course not a lot of meat goes into it. It retains its shape by deep frying until crispy. You eat it with cream, a sauce made of avocado and cream (you can make it in the blender with a little milk and salt), and soft fried potato cubes on the side. Also serve with shredded lettuce and slices of tomato.

Another version are shredded meat tacos, because a lot more meat goes into the tortilla and deep fried, this is a favorite of children because you pour a little cream over them and dip the ends into guacamole. It is usually prepared with shredded chicken, tastes better. Yummy.

The deep fried latin dish with shredded beef, chicken or pork that you are probably referring to might be Empanada's. I lived in Florida for a few years and my girlfriend would make them for me at least once a month. A very time consuming dish to make but well worth it.

I thought the ones with meat were taquitos. The ones that are sweet are flautas.

either taquitos or flautas.

i think the difference is that taquitos uses corn tortilla and it's usually skinnier, whereas flautas are made with flour tortilla and it's thicker.

this is coming from a chinese girl though!
