I try not to use my inhaler sometimes when I'm running and it seems like if I start to feel like my breathing is getting slightly out of my control I slow to a fast walking pace for just a short while and take really deep breaths in and hold them for a few seconds. This seems like it helps to slow down my breathing a bit to get it under control.

they have an over the counter inhaler called primatene mist at most pharmacies, although I know it's late you might have a 24 hour pharmacy or wal-mart somewhere

put your head in the freezer while the freezer is blowing the smokey stuff and breathe slowly, worked for me on serverral occations! i no it sounds far out but the cool air will help with the inflamed\contracted bronccial tubes that limit breathing.
