Anemia is the condition of having less than the normal number of red blood cells. Your first question should be, why am I anemic? Anemia can be the result of many different things like recent surgery, very heavy periods, bowel disease, alcohol abuse or not enough iron/folate in your diet.
The first line of treatment for iron deficient anemia (the most common type) is usually a supplement containing extra iron, folate and B12. You can also eat more iron containing foods - see the link below for suggestions.

Barring obvious other sources - like a recent surgery - in a man anemia would be assumed to be from GI sources until proven otherwise. A "guiac" test (testing for the presence of blood even though it can not be seen) would be appropriate - they are usually done is sets of two or three. If positive, additional testing like an endoscopy and/or colonoscopy might be warranted.

There can be a variety of blood tests run to help identify what is going on as well. Is the bone marrow producing enough cells? Are the cells "dying" early? Is your liver working normally? Are you deficient in iron? etc. These questions can all be answered with the right blood tests. Of course if any of those screening studies comes back positive then it will prompt further testing - but you will be getting closer to the answer.

Unexplained anemia may be relatively benign but it also might mean some important and potentially even life threatening. I would encourage you to discuss this with your primary doctor who can get the ball rolling to find out why. He/she will know how to direct you.

If all checks out normally then supplementing your diet with "prenatal" vitamins is a good route to get your level back to normal. Good luck.
