We have a Vietnamese restaurant here and I gotto say, it's delicious. The food sounds very plain and simple, but it's much, much more. Never had Afghan food, so I guess I'm a little useless as a judge here, but I can vouch for Vietnamese food though. Good stuff!

I adore Vietnamese food and I'm not Vietnamese. My favorite are the sandwiches with the meat and pickled vegetables. I used to live near Philadelphia and could get them all the time. Now I live in Northern California and have no idea where to find them. I miss those sandwiches!
There was a restaurant in NY that served delicious Chinese-style Vietnamese food. I remember a dish of sweet, sauteed vegetables and mushrooms in a fried egg noodle nest. Boy, was that good!
If anyone knows of a good Vietnamese restaurant in the East Bay, please post it in this thread.

I am a new lover of vietnamese food. Never had a chance to try it until recently.
Out of what I've had so far my favorite is a soup of sorts that escapes me.
It was a beef broth that had green onions, jalepeno pepper slices, rice noodles, bean sprouts, cilantro and something I can't quite put my finger on - might have been anise. This was served with raw beef and lime wedges.
The beef was thinly sliced and raw so you plop all the meat in the broth when its served and the heat from the broth cooks the beef.
What ever its called, it was excellent.

I don't think i ever tasted it....maybe those spring rolls that they sell in the chinese buffets
