All my life I've thought that eating rare steak was healthy, now after reading a few articles, I'm starting to see conflicting views....

In one article I read it stated that medium to rare steak isn't healthy to eat. One main reason is because in order for our body to digest meat, it has to let it rot in our stomach. In the case of rare meat, as it rots algae and other bacterium start to feed and grow in our colon. After a while, one starts to get indigestion problems that lead to having to get a colon cleanse.

In a separate instance, I had an older co-worker telling me that it was unhealthy to eat meat all together b/c we humans weren't built originally for it. He told me that while getting his colon cleansed the doctor spotted green brocolli-like structures in the waste. He asked what it was and the doctor told him it was bacteria that grew in his stomach as a result of him eating rare-medium cooked meat.

Now my co-worker is on a mission to turn everyone into a vegetarian

If you study evolution it states that humans began to develop larger brains because of eating meat.

However you should not eat raw or unproperly cooked meat, our digestive tracts are not the same as carnivores like lions and tigers. But our vestigal appendix might be an organ that was used for digesting raw meats so who's to say humans are not meant to eat meat? I've heard of different reasons for why humans are not supposed to eat meat ranging from the type of teeth we have to our digestive system.

But I do know that doctors tell pregnant women to eat meat while they are pregnant.

Sorry about this answer, your question requires a lot of different ideas to provide any insight, hope this is helpful.

Excuse me, but wouldn't this question be best asked on one of the health pages? No matter how rational your question, if you come to a vegetarian and vegan board and ask if eating meat at any stage is healthy, the only answers that you will get will be no.

This, of course, is aside from the fact that your co-worker can only control his own actions. Although he's right about our not having been built for eating meats at any stage. It's still a decision that each of us must make on our own.

'Cows aren't made to eat meat' is a fact that anyone would agree with. Right? And yet we've been feeding cows meat for the last several decades and still do to this day. It's true we've stopped feeding cows other cows but we still feed them chicken. This is direct evidence that herbivores can be fed meat even though it's bad for them! Humans are the same way, our bodies were not and *are* not meant to eat meat. Yet humans can still eat and digest meat if it's suitably processed. Does that mean it's good for you? NO!

Your coworker is 100% correct. Also please remember that to destroy the prions that cause "mad cow" and (in humans) vCJD you need your meat to be extremely well done as prions don't break down until the temperature exceeds 2900 degrees F. If there is no worry of prions in cattle why doesn't the government allow ranchers to test their herds??
Think about it.

Yes the proccess for meat to digest it prertty much does rot inside you.
And eatting raw meat can also get you sick other ways as it has most likely come in contact with blood and feces from the animals (killing and butchering practices in factories are not very clean) the only way to kill that bacteria is to cook the meat, you could easily get E-coli, Salmonella, or food poisoning.

the actor Josh Hartnett said "I gave up meat when I was 12. … One day I was cutting up a chicken for my mom, and I hit a tumor with the knife. There was pus and blood all over the place. That was enough for me."

Of course once meat is burnt/black is actually becomes carconogenic (causes cancer..like cigarrettes.)

I wouldn't eat the stuff. Its really your decsision though what you eat, so you should tell him that you can make up your own mind.

Most of what your associates are telling you is not fact. Certainly rare steak is fine to eat if you do not eat it too much (fat levels). But by cooking the outside of a rare steak does the killing of the bacteria and the center part does not contain the contaminants that does spoil food.

I don't like my steak still mooing when it arrives at my table. I much prefer it cooked medium, with just a little pink in the middle.
