How many kids are coming? If there are fewer than 10, and if there's a kid-friendly movie out take them to a movie in a mall, then get pizza at the food court and eat your cake and ice cream there. Kids will appreciate the excitement of the excursion (especially if you theme the party favors and cake to match the movie you're seeing), and it's still minor stress and zero cleanup for you.

At your home or a park. It's the decoration that will make the place fun.
