Hi,
So you want to identify Diabetes (not Diabetics).O.K.
You can not by a simple test or by a single symptom can not DEFINITELY SAY that The person under testing is having Diabetes.
What is Diabetes? In a simple way , one can say, that when the Blood sugar level increases beyond the allowed levels due to inadequate secretion of Insulin, that Vital component that changes or helps breaking the food taken into energy, after that has been converted into Glucose and Fructose.
So , in the blood the glucose level increases beyond the allowed levels , and the available insulin is incapable of converting this into energy.....and any further eating will only increase the blood glucose levels (Blood sugar levels). This type of phenomenon if persists then you may say the person is affected with Diabetes.
To know this there may be several symptoms like Thirst, fatigue, weakness feeling inspite of eating well, frequent urination etc etc.
But simply because one or more symptoms are there you can not decide categorically that the person has diabetes.
There are several tests before the ultimate diagnosis is made.
One of the important test is GTT that is Glucose Tolerance Test.
In this test a measured level of glucose is given to a suspected patient in a fixed time intervals and the blood sugar is monitored in a measured spells.
Then the Fasting Blood sugar (mg/dl) and sugar traces in urine, and Postpandrial glucose level ( That is blood sugar after taking food , and measuring the sugar level after a specified interval ) is made along with urine sugar level.
The functioning of Pancreas Gland may also be done ( mostly it will be decided by the Diabetic Specialist).
So please dont take your own decision based on symptoms.
PLEASE APPROACH A COMPETENT PHYSICIAN who will test and guide you ( or any one who has a doubt ,about he having Diabetes) and act according to the advice given by the Diabetic Specialist (I mean the Docor )

Do you mean how can you identify diabetes? Go to a doctor who will do both a finger prick test to see what your current blood glucose level [should be under 120] and also send your blood for testing to see what the average has been over the past 3 months.
He/she will also ask you the following:
1. Frequent urination?
2. Excessive thirst?
3. Unplanned weight gain or weight loss?
4. Numbness or pain in extremeties?
5. Family history of diabetes?
6. Problems with fatigue?
7. Problems with sleeping?

Are you asking how you can identify someone who IS a diabetic or how you can identify diabetes itself?????
If you wish to have yourself screened for diabetes, see your doctor. Your doctor will ask you specific questions and if you give the right answers, your doctor will order the needed tests.

here are the symptoms. The best way is to go to the doc and ask for a blood test.
Symptoms
High blood levels of glucose can cause several problems, including frequent urination, excessive thirst, hunger, fatigue, weight loss, and blurry vision. However, because type 2 diabetes develops slowly, some people with high blood sugar experience no symptoms at all.
Symptoms of type 1 diabetes:
Increased thirst
Increased urination
Weight loss in spite of increased appetite
Fatigue
Nausea
Vomiting
Symptoms of type 2 diabetes:
Increased thirst
Increased urination
Increased appetite
Fatigue
Blurred vision
Slow-healing infections
Impotence in men
Signs and tests
A urine analysis may be used to look for glucose and ketones from the breakdown of fat. However, a urine test alone does not diagnose diabetes. The following blood glucose tests are used to diagnose diabetes:
Fasting blood glucose level -- diabetes is diagnosed if higher than 126 mg/dL on two occasions. Levels between 100 and 126 mg/dl are referred to as impaired fasting glucose or pre-diabetes. These levels are considered to be risk factors for type 2 diabetes and its complications.
Random (non-fasting) blood glucose level -- diabetes is suspected if higher than 200 mg/dL and accompanied by the classic symptoms of increased thirst, urination, and fatigue. (This test must be confirmed with a fasting blood glucose test.)
Oral glucose tolerance test -- diabetes is diagnosed if glucose level is higher than 200 mg/dL after 2 hours (This test is used more for type 2 diabetes.)
Patients with type 1 diabetes usually develop symptoms over a short period of time, and the condition is often diagnosed in an emergency setting. In addition to having high glucose levels, acutely ill type 1 diabetics have high levels of ketones.
Ketones are produced by the breakdown of fat and muscle, and they are toxic at high levels. Ketones in the blood cause a condition called "acidosis" (low blood pH). Urine testing detects both glucose and ketones in the urine. Blood glucose levels are also high.

Symptoms in my 11 yr. old daughter was eating and drinking lots of food and drink, yet losing weight. The weight loss was drastic within a two week period. A prick of the finger with a blood glucose machine test strip tells if one is diabetic or not.
