Im a type 1 diabetic and for me the best things to eat are food with low GI (glocose index), with means that the carb goes out in the bloodstream slower then foods with high GI. Oat have low GI while Sweets have high GI. then i just have to take the right amount of Insuli to what im eating. 1unit(homolog) for 10g of carb. This is just for me, maybe it won't work for you. eating loads of Vegetables is also good and healty. When im eating a meal, 1/3 of the food on the plate are carbs like pasta,bread, rice, couscous or potatoes. Mixing the carbs with vegetable and meat also makes the food enter the blood slower, Soups are very fine adn the carbs are so small so it won't take long for the glucose to enter the bloodstream, when it happens quick the blodsuger will raise quick. Low GI is the best!!

WEIGHT WATCHERS! I too am type 1 and I started it the second week in January and my levels have been WONDERFUL! It teaches you how to eat in portions and to limit your eating so you pay attention and not "mindlessly eat". It also teaches you how to pay attention to what is IN your food and how to read the labels. I've been type 1 for the past 18, almost 19 yrs and have tried dieticians who just end up confusing me and other diets that required you to buy thier foods that a lot of the time ended up having too much sugar in them and just weren't beneficial. I'm tellin you -- WEIGHT WATCHERS is a great model diet for diabetics!!!

Do your own studies. No one is going to care about your health as much as you. You're not receiving grants to tell you that artificial sweeteners are "healthy." ;-)
Avoid artificial sweeteners. They are hard on the organs like the liver. Don't simply look at a "disease" but rather focus on optimal health and support your body to manage your increased risk of stroke and other health complications which come along with being a diabetic.
Whole foods tend to provide a "smoother" glucose response to your body. There's even a significant different between the glucose response of eating an orange compared to drinking orange juice. Learn what works best for you and consider keeping a health log and make note of foods that might affect your glucose levels accutely.

not necessarily a diet but just watch the amount of carbs and take the correct amount of insulin to cover those carbs. A type 1 can almost eat anything it is more a moderation and balance thing. I am a type 1 and I count my carbs and take the right amount of insulin to cover that amount so I eat just like my non diabetic husband and kids, only I have to inject myself 5 + times a day they don't.

I wouldn't trust the dietician, I would find out for myself. Read "The Diabetes Improvement Program" by Patrick Quillin. I'm a type two and have found his ideas to work well for me. Should work well for a T1 as well.
