Potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L) constitute a very old food, used by people in America, before Christopher Columbus discovered it . It seems to be that old Incas already consumed it habitually . From there it was carried to Europe, although it took quite a long period to be adopted as a food , since the plant was toxic and it was thought that the consumption of the potatoes could cause illness.

Indeed the potato plant is toxic. It contains an alkaloid named solanine that appears in all the external parts of the plant (leaves, stems , flowers and fruits) and also in the tender buds of the tubers when they germinate. The ingestion of the plant produces gastrointestinal, hepatic and heart damage that can be, in case that the ingestion is high, death.

Um... you CAN, but you probably shouldn't. They belong to Solanaceae- the poison nightshade family. Raw potatoes contain toxins that are destroyed through cooking. Although eating a few raw potatoes won't kill you, it may not make you feel too great either.

Sure, why not?
My grandparents have had potato patch in the garden for ages. I used to rip up potatoes, give them a wash under the tap and eat them as a kid all the time!

Umm, they are really hard and taste a bit odd. I did try when I was little and thought, well that's why we don't eat them raw. So no, I wouldn't try it. Carrots are different though, they taste good when they are raw.
