I was simply wondering what your thoughts on eggs are. Do you think that it is wrong for Vegetarians to eat eggs? Do you think it's the same as eating meat? Why?

It's up to the person to decide if they want to eat eggs or not. If you ask me, I dont have a problem with eggs as long as they are disguised like in cakes or biscuits.
It's almost the same as eating meat, because we're stopping a chick from seeing the light of day. But what if the chick would turn out to be deformed in any way? We're saving mom nature from bringing an unheathy being into this world.
There's no such thing called rights or wrongs for vegetarians, it's all personal choice. I'm a veggie and I'm proud of it and I intend to be one.

Veganism can be too strict for some people.
It's impossible to find a decent vegan meal
at any resturant in the city I live. I relish the
oppurtunity to go into the more veg-friendly
cities that are 60 miles away. For this reason
I cannot begrudge a lacto-ovo vegetarian.
I think they should be applauded for dropping
all types of meat.

I didn't become a vegan overnight I spent two
years in Lacto-ovo land myself. Therefore,
who am I too judge anybody? Also, I believe
all of us vegs have to support each other.
Animals are dying and experiencing torture
everyday. If we segment ourselves with
" more vedge than thou attitudes" how will
we ever accomplish anything?

P.S. Veganism takes a huge leap of faith
and a lot of careful planning. It's not
for everybody.

I think Lacto-Ovo vegetarianism is wrong. Vegetarians won't eat meat on the grounds of something to do witht he way its killed, or it means taking life or some doodad like that.

What I don't think they realise is that eating eggs is effectively taking life, since each egg has the potential to be fertilised and grow into a new chick, and Milk is just as bad since in some cases it means the slaughter of calves so that the mother's keep producing milk while not feeding them.

L-O Vegetarianism is bulldust. It is quite simply a way of looking like an eco-warrior when you in effect are still Hannibal the Cannibal.

Eggs are not fertilized and they don't come from a dead animal BUT there are eggs that are far more appropriate to eat (if that makes sense). I buy eggs from a very local organic farm and the chickens run all over the place unlike many egg farms that keep the hens in bad conditions and feed them "who knows what"

I don't think it's wrong.
Some do...claiming its some kind of sadistic violence against chicken embryos.

And the same goes for the "Lacto-" part of your question...as some think the cows are being exploited by humans when their milk is taken from them.

Personally, as long as all animals are treated with respect and are healthy, then its all good.

Rjaym is absolutely right, we are not true herbivores, herbivores are grazers, not just natural vegans. No, we are actually frugivores. Also, just because your uncle raises cattle humanely does not mean all farmers do. I laugh at the stupidity of people like you, who think all farms are family farms, where the cows are allowed to run free. Do you HONESTLY think farmers could keep the supply shelves filled at ALL the grocery stores in the country? The FDA wouldn't even allow calves to drink their mother's milk, even if they were raised humanely. The calf IS sold, but not to market, usually. They are put in a crate to keep their flesh white, and they're sold to veal "farmers". If they're female, they're kept to produce more milk and veal.

To answer your question: I believe it is worse than eating meat, but I won't force that belief on anybody. I respect them for cutting out meat, at least, and I know they're doing they're part.

Meat animals create them. They have cholesterol. If not properly inspected one could actually find one in your egg (farmer's market, for example). It sounds like hypocrisy.

Then again, I think vegetarianism for anything but religious reasons (PETA, et al) is misguided and silly.

As said before being vegan-vegetarian for any reason isn't very logical. I am not saying it is wrong if that is your personal belief, just not logical. The human body is designed to eat meat. Our stomachs have acid, true herbavores do not have stomach acid(cows, horses, deer). We also have teeth designed to eat meat. And most importantly, the best source of properly balanced protiens and amino acids are in meat. Yes we can eat the right combinations of beans, rice, grains, etc. to obtain the proper combinations of protiens, but it is much more of a balancing act. With meat there already there in the proper proportions. And besides other animals eat animals, its life, deal with it.

Most of the eggs we eat were never fertilized, they would have never hatched anyway. Chicken produce eggs whether they have been fertilized or not, just like humans and most mamals. So you are in no stretch of the imagination taking a life. Besides eggs are a great source of protien. But whether it is right to eat them or not, I say yes, but you have to decide if you think it is right. Don't do it just because someone else says you should. Weigh the facts and your personal beleifs, and decide for yourself.

As far as milk, they do not slaughter calves to make the mother produce milk. The calf is far too valuable to just kill. They may wait till it is weaned and sell it at market, but no farmer I have ever known would just kill it for no reason. The price on the calf is usually as high as the heifer that produced it (if not higher). Originally to obtain milk they would let the heifer have a calf, they would raise the calf, taking some milk for themselves and leaving some for the calf(the heifer will produce plenty, usually enough for multiple calves). Once it was time for the calf to be weaned they would continue to milk the cow, so she wouldn't stop producing milk. Unfortunatly now they inject horomones to make the cow produce milk, many of them haven't even had a calf.

Thank you to the post above, it just goes to show that many vegans do not think logicaly, and many times don't have their facts straight. If that is something you choose to do, that is your perogative, but do not try to convert others, especially when you are doing it by spreading informantion that is not correct.

In response to the answer below:
I know most meat in this country is not raised humanely. Most of it is full of horomones and mass produced. Not only that the conditions under which it is raised (especially chickens) is awful. The answer to this is not cutting meat out of your diet, it is buying meat/eggs that are raised in the proper way. Besides if you are for humane treatment of animals, which do you see as more likely to ever happen, convincing people to buy free range or organic, or stopping everyone in the country from eating meat all together? You are much more likely to get someont to buy free range/organic than not to buy meat/leather/fur at all. To be honest, I don't see either one ever happening. At least I know the meat I eat is healthy and not full of horomones.

And to the whole frugivore comment, you missed the point entirely. Our bodies are designed to eat a combination of meat, fruits, grains, and vegetables. Our stomach is not designed to digest only PLANT MATTER (let me generalize so we don't have any confusion over terminology), to digest plant matter (fruit, veg, and grain) does not require the strong acids we have in our stomachs. We have acids in our stomachs because we are omnivores.

If you want to be Vegan, great, more meat for me, but my point is, stop trying to convert everyone. It is a personal decision, you are welcome to present the facts as they are, but get them correct!

And I would like to know the reasoning why it is OK for all other carnivores/omnivores to eat meat, but not humans?

And a little tip, don't tell a farmer how farms operate, you will loose that battle. I have been there and seen it. I have seen chicken houses where chickens are piled on top of one another standing in their on excrement. I have seen the comercial cattle farms where they add chicken sh** to cattle feeds. I have seen the horror stories that you speak of, and I know they exist. I could work at one if I so chose(and probably made more money), but I do not agree with the way they operate, so I choose to work with smaller family farms and organic farms as much as I posibly can.
