The above posts are not "proven" and "proven" is a very strong word. There are a lot of factors here. Lets start with basics.
HDL = good cholesterol. This is something you want to get higher and is "protective"
LDL = bad cholesterol. You want this to be low.
The best way to lower LDL cholesterol are the "statin" drugs which you can get a prescription for from your doctor. These are THE BEST. They work on the liver (where cholesterol is made). There are some other drugs that work at different sites and work quite well, but they tend to have more side effects.
Something like Niacin will raise your HDL. However, there are side effects in some people.
Nuts, fish, and other unsaturated fats can also raise your HDL.
Cardiovascular exercise is also very important raising your HDL and lowering your LDL! Add this along with statins and you should be good to go. Also, cut out as many saturated and trans fats as possible - especially good would be to cut down fast food (which tends to have a lot of trans fats).

Mine was high before too, I cut out sugar totally, then started on a bowl of oatmeal each morning for breakfast with an apple or some fruit, then made sure I had 4 other veggies or fruits a day, cut out eating chicken skins, potato chips, greasy foods and mine dropped from almost 300 down to 120. All are natural proven ways to reduce it.

There is an excellent recipe to lower your cholesterol with niacin, psyllium and lecitine in the book “Your heart, your health”. Breathing slowly and intentional and enjoy your life, very useful. Stress is a bad advisor, drink enough water and avoid fried foods...
