As far as I know, yes. You may have some trouble getting your medical examiners cert. required to drive an ambulance. But if you can get cleared medically then go for it. Just make sure you have everything you need to manage your condition at ALL times. I work on a ALS ambulance and we regularly are in the unit running calls for 12 straight hours with no breaks for food or rest.

I am not an EMT but I'm taking a basic medical law class for a course requirement & it clearly explains that The Good Samaritan law is applied only if a person practices medicine/first aid "within the scope of their training". The law is in place so that the person helping in the emergency cannot be sued for any problems that may occur as a result of the first aid. So a medical assistant could not perform a tracheotomy, and be covered under the Good Samaritan Law. There is probably much more to this law, but like I said, it's just a basic medical law class.

Yes they can. As long as it is under control, and you either go by your diet strictly, and/or take your medicine or insulin as instructed by your doctor, then you shouldn't have any problems. Keep in mind that you can't be a brittle diabetic working on an ambulance......some one may need you at the worst time. With my experience, Murphy's Law comes in to play on a regular basis: What can go wrong will go wrong, at the worst possible time. Think about very hard.......someone's life just may depend on it. Best of luck to you.
