I was diagnosed yesterday with hypoglycemia. I have several family members that are diabetic. I got tested yesterday because a couple of days ago I got real shaky and somewhat incoherent, I checked my blood and got a reading of 25 and 10 minutes later a reading of 24. I have the kit due to having too many episodes of feeling real bad. On the 5 hour tolerance test yesterday my sugar went up to 189 and I was spilling over in my urine 500mg. Then on the next blood draw and urine sample my glucose was 89 and I was spilling over in my urine over 1000mg. The next draw I went to 115 and in urine was showing trace of blood and still over 1000mg. Then my glucose dropped on next to last test to 62 with no spill in urine. Then to 71 with no spill. When I started spilling over in my urine over 1000mg the nurse told me that most people with that much spill are diabetic. Has anyone heard of this or has it happened to you? I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia. Any info much appreciated.

Thanks The Doc,...also I am having many other symptoms of diabetes and hypoglycemia. My right leg feels heavy, have lots of pain in it, sometimes have paralysis from waste down, trouble walking, weakness, blurred vision, vertigo, etc. The doctor wants me to see neurologist she checked my leg and said that she suspects neuropathy or MS. There are so many different neuropathy sites. But I saw that sometimes it is caused by diabetes. Not sure about hypoglycemia though. I know the nurse that was doing the lab work on me yesterday told me there is nothing normal about me. She was very confused by it all too. Thanx again :)

florin,... My mother died when I was 15 so I am not sure which diabetes she had. She was insulin dependent. My niece was diagnosed at age of 6 with glucose of 1097. They called it Juvenile diabetes, insulin dependent also. Also 2 sisters have hypoglycemia. My grandmothers on both sides had diabetes. They are both deceased so not sure about their diabetes situations. My other sister had diabetes she took pills for. I am 5'3" and weigh about 130. My weight fluctuates between 118 and 135. I haven't been a healthy eater. But the doctor gave me the 1500 calorie diabetic diet to start. Hope this helps.

That is very interesting. You did have an abnormal glucose tolerance test, but hypoglycemia is actually not caused by diabetes (it happens often in diabetics, but that's because of the medicines that treat the disease, not the diabetes itself). Also, the kidney is usually very good at conserving glucose and does not usually start to loose it until levels get up around 200 or above (though this can vary person to person) so I'm intrigued that you were loosing so much sugar in your urine at relatively low levels (though it is possible that it spilled when levels were higher and sat in your bladder for a while to be urinated out later). You might want to see an endocrinologist to confirm that result and you may need to see a nephrologist, if you really do have a primary problem with your kidneys causing excretion of glucose and subsequent hypoglycemia, then one of those two are the most likely to be able to help.

First of all, hypoglycemia is normal under various circumstances: fasting, after exercises, dehydration, stress, and so on...
Secondly, when you have relatives with diabetes, several tests that indicates hypoglycemia or abnormal urine glucose elimination, must be an alert toward further tests. How is your diet? Your weight? What are your daily activities like? Do you have other medical conditions? What kind of diabetes have your relatives been diagnosed with? There are so many questions to be answered!...
Considering all these circumstances, repeated hypoglycemic tests are only indicators, medical findings, signs. All signs and symptoms must be united into a syndrome, and, coroborated with family history and other laboratory findings, turned into a diagnosed medical condition.
Don't be alarmed! Even health can be diagnosed! Diabetes is a disease with a very good prognosis, when diagnosed early enough and well treated, so don't stop here, only to hypoglycemia findings.
... and don't forget: diabetes needs, sometimes medicines, but for sure the first thing is a certain way of life, exercise and diet.
Third issue: under so many circumstances (undiagnosed conditions, activities, diet, stress, part of the day...), a unstable glycemia and urine glucose excretion may vary considerably, so, in fact, these values are not indicators of anything! Really! With a certain diet, under medical supervision and stress-free circumstances, the glycemia can be stabilized and proper diagnosis and prognosis can be performed.
